Core Activities & Features

Memorial Lantern Making: Attendees are invited to create decorated memorial lanterns to honor those lost or to celebrate someone’s recovery journey. With participants’ permission, these lanterns are displayed publicly inside the Central Library on International Overdose Awareness Day (August 31).

Lived-Experience Guest Panel: The event features powerful stories of recovery and remembrance from a panel of speakers, including Kitara Johnson-Jones (CEO of Gabriel’s Challenge), Brenton Sconce (Founder of the BEAR Foundation), and community members with personal lived experiences.

Artistic Expression: Recognizing the deep connection between creativity and healing, attendees are encouraged to bring and share their own artwork or the artwork of their lost loved ones. The library windows are also used to display encouraging community messages written on paper butterflies.

Resource Fair: Local and state healthcare advocates provide immediate care navigation. Notable participants include representatives from the WSU College of Nursing (providing pain-management education) and Washington Poison Control.
