Sanca Goldfields, in collaboration with New Bronville NPO, will be hosting the International Overdose Awareness Day Memorial Prayer & Candlelight Vigil 2026 is a community remembrance event that brings together faith leaders, families, community members, government departments, civil society organisations, and stakeholders to commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day on 31 August 2026.
The event will begin with a church service dedicated to prayer, reflection, and messages of hope for individuals, families, and communities affected by substance use and addiction. Following the service, participants will gather at the N1 Bronville Cross, a known road accident hotspot, for a candlelight vigil in memory of those who have lost their lives due to substance misuse, particularly alcohol-related road crashes.
Purple balloons, the international symbol of overdose awareness, will be released after a prayer as a tribute to friends, family members, brothers, sisters, children, and all innocent victims whose lives were tragically cut short. This symbolic act serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of substance misuse and the importance of making responsible choices.
