Every life counts – let’s talk about overdose

    NUAA Overdose Day Event

    Thursday 31 August- 3:30pm – 4.30pm

We need to talk about overdose

Overdoses are preventable and reversible. Between 2004–2014, the number of people dying from accidental overdose increased by 61% and was roughly equivalent to the road toll. For Aboriginal people, this jumped to 141% over the same time.

Each death from accidental overdose is a brother, an uncle, a sister, a mother, father

For every person who dies, up to 25 people live, some with long-term after effects. We need to support each other and make sure that anyone who cares for someone who uses drugs knows how to respond to prevent overdose and accidental death.

Join us as our community leaders and peers lead a conversation about our experiences. Our partners on the day include ACON, Family Drug Support, Students for Sensible Drug Support, the Kirketon Road Centre and The Noffs Foundation.

Drug checking kits and naloxone training will be available on the day along with NUAA Overdose prevention resources.

Come along, share some afternoon tea and raise the focus on this important issue. Hear from each other how to support and what it takes to prevent accidental overdose of our friends and family.

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing illness that is difficult to cure. General practitioners (GPs) and other primary care professionals have a key role to
play in prevention, early detection and management of substance misuse and addiction.

This one day Active Learning Module (ALM) aims to develop and enhance GPs’ skills in recognising and treating patients who present with drug addictions. The workshop will cover many of the dominant addictive substances seen in general practice including alcohol, benzodiazepines, cannabis, opioids and other psychostimulant drugs.

We will look at physical, psychological and legal issues surrounding these drugs, the patients who use them and the role and responsibilities of the general practitioner. Prescribing guidelines and comorbidities will also be covered.

    Learning outcomes
    1. Recognise substance use disorder and associated behaviours in patients.
    2. Identify treatment options including brief interventions and formal treatment programs.
    3. Outline the legal aspects of treatment when prescribing Schedule 8 drugs.
    4. Implement a systems based approach to prescribing for a patient with a substance use disorder.

This is a world event for Overdose Awareness and in the current crisis we are in with Fraser Region having a high spike in deaths in the last two weeks.
To create awareness and for everyone to know that Overdose affects all of us and Overdoses happen using illicit and licit drugs and it affects all of us. Abbotsford is second only to Surrey for Overdose Deaths.
Our hope is to bring our communities together, reduce the stigma attached to Overdoses and create more awareness in the general community around this epidemic affecting our most vulnerable citizens, those that use drugs recreationally and those that use prescription opiates.
WE thank everyone for their concern. We also encourage anyone that has lost someone to overdose to stop by the memorial quilt table and fill in a square. This will eventually become a quilt that could possibly travel across Canada and become an ongoing memorial to those that are lost.
The partners in this event are Positive Living Fraser Valley Society, SARA for Women Society, Abby PD, The City of Abbotsford, Mennonite Central Committee, Abbotsford Community Services and 5&2 Ministries, and community members.
ALSO NALOXONE TRAINING WILL BE OFFERED FOR THE ENTIRE EVENT (Inquire at the Positive Living Tent) and then there will be a group training.

wo people die every day of overdose in Ontario. The provincial opioid strategy and their response is insufficient. The Minister of Health says he wants more data before further action or resources are dedicated to this public health emergency.

On Overdose Awareness Day we will hold a vigil and build a memorial outside his community office, on the territories of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinabe, the Haudenosaunee, the Mississaugas of the New Credit.

We will come together in our grief, loss and determination to demand action and honour the people we have lost to overdose. Our loved ones are not data. He wants data? Then we will bring it to his door step. We encourage people from all over the city to join us to help build a memorial that he and his government can’t ignore.

Where: Dr. Eric Hoskin’s office – 803 St Clair W between Christie & Oakwood.

What to bring: photographs, mementos, signs with your loved ones names, candles, flowers, etc.

When: We will begin building the vigil at 11 am. Come by any time and help build the memorial. Overdose prevention training with naloxone will be offered. A memorial ceremony will take place at 6 pm.

On the heels of the release of Nova Scotia’s Opioid Use and Overdose Framework, the Ally Centre of Cape Breton in partnership with Public Health, the Jane Paul Indigenous Women’s Resource Center and Mental Health and Addictions will be recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31st. The groups are extending an invitation to the public to attend a memorial service for those who died or suffered permanent injury from overdose. It is a chance for families, friends, first responders, front line workers and health care providers to reflect on the lives of those lost and feel the support of others who are experiencing the same pain and trauma of loss. It is also an opportunity to create awareness and to reduce the stigma of drug related deaths. It is important that no-one feels shame or disgrace over a drug overdose. If this has happened in your family, you are not alone. From 2008 to 2016, 169 people died from drug overdose in Cape Breton.
Christine Porter, Director of the Ally Centre of Cape Breton says, “Although our Provincial and Federal Governments and Health Authorities are now moving quickly on certain aspects of harm reduction, such as sustainable funding for needle distribution programs and increased access to Naloxone, there is still a need to address increased access to a range of treatment options including Methadone and Suboxone, as well as safe consumption sites. There is also a great need to act upon the inequities felt by rural communities and those communities experiencing a lack of social infrastructure which is needed to address mental health and addictions. “
The event will take place on August 31st at the Wentworth Park band shell in Sydney at 12:00 noon. We will be providing on the spot overdose prevention training and free take home Naloxone kits as well as have lots of materials available concerning overdose prevention. An opening prayer and smudging will be performed by Katy MacEwan an Elder from Membertou. The Reverend Dana Feltmate will be speaking a few words of hope and support. There will also be a poetry reading and a song by our community Naloxone trainer, Julia DiGeorgio. The Membertou Drummers will be performing the honor song. We will hold a moment of silence, where the first names of those who have passed will be voiced in remembrance and support of their loved ones. The Ally Centre invites anybody who would like to have their loved one’s name voiced to please contact Christine Porter, 902-567-1766 or email christine.porter@bellaliant.com

Downtown Eastside community partners Culture Saves Lives and Western Aboriginal Harm Reduction Society (WAHRS) in collaboration with Canadian Association of People Who Use Drugs (CAPUD) will be hosting an event on August 31st, International Day for Overdose Awareness, to memorialize those lost to British Columbia’s overdose crisis.
According to the BC Coroners Service, between January 2016 and May 2017 there have been 1607 illicit drug overdose deaths in British Columbia. Despite the mass attention that this has attracted both from the public and the media, efforts have been unable to successfully reduce the number of overdose incidents, and people continue to die at alarming rates. In May of 2017 129 people died of suspected overdose; this equates to more than 4 people every single day.
It’s easy to talk about these numbers and lose site of the devastating human loss, and the effects that this loss has at a community level. This event will give a voice to those that have been affected by this crisis. The day will feature a commemorative art canvas and attendees will be encouraged to add the names of those lost, as well as artistic tributes, to the canvas using paints or markers provided by the organizers. The hope is that this canvas will make its way to Parliament Hill in Ottawa where it can tell a more personalized story of the overdose crisis in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The day will also feature speakers from local organizations that support harm reduction, and will include those with lived experience and allies, as well as First Nations’ elders. Food will be provided by the organizers.
This event is one of several coordinated events being organized by CAPUD across Canada in honour of International Day for Overdose Awareness.

Buildings and Bridges Turning Purple Across Tennessee
International Overdose Awareness Day-East Tennessee Candlelight Vigil

CHATTANOOGA, TN- Bridges and buildings in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis will turn purple on August 31 in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day. Tennessee International Overdose Awareness Day be candlelight vigil are on Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 7:30- 8:30pm in front of the TN Aquarium. The Liberty Building (Tower) on Chestnut Street will also be lit purple as well in recognition.

Our message for the event is:
Overdose Awareness Day is for honoring those we’ve lost and to bring awareness. Not all overdoses are fatal. In fact, most are not, and that’s largely due to the Good Sam Law and Naloxone. Overdose Awareness Day is to honor those who lost their fight, but it’s also a message of hope from those of us who survived. We are a message that we go on to do great things, and help others, that we are worthy of being saved. Because my husband died from an overdose, I feel it is my responsibility, my duty to show my daughter she is not alone in losing a loved one, that some positive can come from all the pain in bringing awareness, and I can help save as many as I can and live for those who didn’t make it. Please join me in honoring those we’ve loved and lost, and to spread the message that #wedorecover – Heather Hamill McDonald, Tennessee Overdose Prevention advocate

The Chattanooga event is hosted by Tennessee Overdose Prevention (TOP) who is also coordinating the use of Facebook Live across the state of Tennessee as bridges and buildings turn purple in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis. Before the event, the TOP Facebook group, International Overdose Awareness Day Event Live-streaming, is posting hints to help people and groups who have never used Facebook Live. Our goal with live streaming is to unite people across the state who will be unable to attend or will be attending events in other areas as we listen to speakers and light candles at the vigil. Tennessee Overdose Prevention will be using Facebook Live to live stream the speakers, candlelight vigil, and the bridge/building turning purple using the hashtag #EndOverdoseLiveTN. The International Overdose Awareness Day Events scheduled for Chattanooga, Nashville, Memphis, Bristol, and Cleveland will also be posting Facebook Live videos.

Prevention Point Pittsburgh invites you to a free showing of this powerful film in honor of Overdose Awareness Day.
The film takes us through one day in the life of eight people, from seven cities, in seven different countries of the world, from morning until night. They all have something in common – all of them use drugs. But these people are not defined by their drug use. All of them have their unique personalities, stories, and social networks. And the environment in which they live, the attitudes they face, the laws that regulate drug use, and the health services available to them have an enormous impact on their lives. This film is not only about drug users – it was also produced by drug users. It strives to challenge our common myths and preconceptions about drugs and the people who use them. It gives a voice to those representing one of the most marginalised communities of our world, to tell stories untold about hate, love, suffering, and happiness. It shows how they engage in social activism to break the silence and fight the stigma that shadows their days.

This is Yakima’s first ever International Overdose Awareness Day and hope to mark this on the calendar every year as a community partner event. We are hoping to have community partners such as syringe exchange local treatment centers , mental health and many other community resources to the table so that the community knows where to go if they are seeking help . Providers will have a health resource table and information on services provided at this event. We have a remembrance wall for those that have been lost to an overdose , speakers that have survived an overdose and a mother that lost her son to an overdose speaking at the event. We also ask that you bring a pair of shoes to represent anyone you may have lost to an overdose .
Overdose Awareness Day has been a key remembrance event for those who have died from fatal drug overdoses since 2001. On August 31 thousands of people worldwide will stand beside the friends and families of fatal overdose victims to reflect on their losses. The event intends to reinforce the idea that no-one need feel shame or disgrace at the death of someone from drug overdose. This is Yakima’s chance to stand together with the international community observing this day.
Overdose Awareness Day also presents an opportunity to help the wider community understand that drug overdose is a social issue and no-one is immune to drug harm.

It’s been almost a year since we received the call that our precious 22-year old son Jameson Harris was in critical condition from a heroin/fentanyl overdose. Dana Harris and I immediately took the redeye flight to West Palm Beach, Florida. The next morning we walked into Jameson’s room in the ICU at St. Mary’s hospital.

That day was August 31. We had no idea that our son was not going to survive. We had no idea that it was International Overdose Awareness Day. We had no idea how many lives would be lost to addiction. We had no idea how our lives would be changed forever.

To honor our beautiful Jameson Harris we are marking International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 and invite you to join us. At 6 pm, we will meet at the Del Mar Powerhouse Park for a beach walk, potluck and candlelight memorial. Anyone who wishes to attend is welcome. We’d love to have you share this special event with us in honoring our loved ones who lost their battle to this disease.

Overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., and the majority of those deaths are from opioids like prescription painkillers and heroin. Naloxone is a safe, effective medication that, when given in time, can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It has saved thousands of lives. If you or a loved one uses opioids, legal or illicit, you need this training!

All attendees will receive instruction on how to recognize the signs of overdose, what to do and what not to do in an overdose situation, how to administer Naloxone, and proper follow up procedures.

Naloxone Overdose Prevention Kits will be provided after training. Please bring medical insurance card (including Medicaid / Husky) and applicable prescription co-pay for pharmacist. Limited number of kits provided at no charge by GHHRC for the uninsured, while supplies last.
