International Overdose Awareness Day, remembers those lives lost to overdose.

Australia continues to suffer through a dramatic rise in overdose deaths, with five Australians dying each day from accidental overdose, many of these preventable. We come together each year to remind ourselves of the very real crisis we face, and consider how we can continue to do better, support one another and prevent this daily tragedy.

This year, Nigel Brunsdon – visiting lecturer from Liverpool’s John Moores University, and harm reduction activist/photographer. Nigel has travelled extensively and documented harm reduction programs. Since running services himself for 20 years, he works mainly online now, and operates a number of internationally renowned websites, supporting the work of Harm Reduction.

As part of his Australia tour, looking at Drug Consumption Spaces, he is visiting Geelong to discuss harm Reduction, photography, and much more.

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to hear from one of the Worlds best….

Time to Remember, Time To Act

We will be marking International Overdose Awareness on Friday, August 24th and invite you to join us.

Overdose Awareness Day has been a key remembrance event for those who have died from fatal drug overdoses since 2001. Thousands of people worldwide will stand alongside the friends and families of fatal overdose victims to reflect on those who have been lost. We will be remembering those lost on August 24th, promoting overdose awareness to our community. The event is organised on the understanding that no-one need feel shame or disgrace over a drug overdose.

Overdose Awareness Day offers all who have been affected by overdose a chance to publicly mourn and help the wider community understand mental illness, prescription overdose, unintentional overdose and how fatal overdose profoundly affects mainstream society.

The day also serves as a warning that not only illicit drugs can be dangerous and no-one is immune to overdose.

With the number of fatalities from prescription drugs growing it is also a chance to see that medicines are not always our friends. Painkillers and other pharmacy drugs play an important medical role but their careless use can have tragic long-term consequences.

Participation in International Overdose Awareness Day is free. We will be honoring those we lost and share information on the overdose epidemic in our community. Anyone wishing to be involved may do so.

Join us in a multi-organizational event planned by advocacy groups from across the state in a centralized community-wide vigil for those we’ve lost to overdose. Vigil will include guest speakers, entertainers, and music followed by a candle light vigil.

    We’ll hear remarks from:

    – Mark Wahlberg
    – Experts in the field, Peer Advocates, and more

Come to learn about opioid addiction risk factors: Resource Tables will be provided.

I’m looking for justice so no more young adults die of overdose from street drugs synthetic laboratory-made with fentanyl and elephant tranquilizer, sold on Long Island streets. The punishment to sellers is little. The law must change, more rehabs should open every day. Over 11 kids and young adults die of overdose here on Long Island. News and county are hiding all truth and evidence, arresting addicts instead of leaders. Look for the source, we need justice, it’s like a virus spreading killing all. Medicate them with drugs enough and no one cares when a parent cries. My son is an addict. Blood test them and sentence them to rehab as punishment, don’t leave them on the streets until they’re willing to go. They will never go, they are dying of overdose. I lost my son 6 weeks ago – 22 years old. Enough. I begged for help – system is corrupted, not enough professionals to deal with this disease, law is not helping. We need more detectives / informers to stop this tragedy. No parent should bury their kids and suffer that way.

September is National Recovery Month! Join us for this FREE event.

The 4th Annual Fox Cities Lights of Hope will be held on September 9, 2018 at 5 pm–this allows time for people to gather together and to honor and support our loved ones in their respective stages of recovery BEFORE the opening season football game between the GB Packers and Chicago Bears which begins at 7:20 pm.

The 2018 WI Faces of Addiction and Recovery Quilts will be displayed. The red squares signify someone in active addiction, the gray squares signify someone who is incarcerated for their addiction. Please NOTE: the Len Bias Law plays a HUGE role in the incarcerations–often friends are using together, one dies, one lives and the person who lives is charged with the death. It’s typically NOT dealers who are convicted and incarcerated. The white squares signify recovery, along with HOPE and SUCCESS. The black squares signify someone has tragically lost his or her life to addiction. We anticipate that there will be over 500 black squares–only a tiny snapshot of the number of overdoses throughout the State of Wisconsin. The quilts are considered living quilts because the statuses can change any time except for the black squares.

At the event, we will listen to speakers and then afterwards light four candles – red for those in active addiction, gray for those who are incarcerated, white for those in recovery, black for those who have lost a loved one to addiction. Please bring your own dripless candles or a paper plate to catch any drips.
