Event Information:Please bring flowers, candles and photos of the people you’ve lost to add to the memorial that we will leave behind in memory of their lives and as a reminder that we need action now.
International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is a global event held on August 31st each year and aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have met with death or permanent injury as a result of drug overdose. Overdose has become a leading cause of death in Ontario – deaths that could be prevented! In Ontario, there was a 242% increase in fatal opioid overdoses between 1991 and 2010. In 2010, there were approximately 550 deaths related to opioid overdose, which equates to one or two deaths every single day.
We need action from all levels of government to end the crisis of overdose death that has taken the lives of people we love! We demand:
– A commitment to end the war on drugs which is a war on the people who use them!
– Good Samaritan Laws so people are not afraid to call for emergency help.
– Naloxone without prescription and in the hands of all people who use drugs, prescribed or not prescribed and in the hands of friends and family members of people who use drugs.
– Expanded overdose prevention services including the funding to expand them.
– Supervised consumption sites for people who need to use at a fixed location
– Expansion of harm reduction programs
– Education and information
We are losing the people we care about, our friends and family members, at an enormous rate. The people we have lost are important to us and we want to prevent more deaths. We grieve these loses and miss the people we have lost.
This event is being organized by people who have been deeply impacted by the loss of people in our lives who have died as a result of an overdose. If you are someone who would like to speak at this event please contact the admins or email or POSTS

Brixton, London

International Overdose Awareness Day 2015
Location: Lorraine Hewitt House, 12-14 Brighton Terrace, Brixton, London, SW9 9TQ
Type of Event:For the last few years on International Overdose Awareness Day(IOD) we(LHH clients) run an event in the reception area of Lorraine Hewitt House(Lorraine Hewitt was a champion of drug user rights in South London). We will have a stall in reception with lots of useful harm min info on safer injecting, overdose(not just opiates), wound care, subutex/methadone titration, Naloxone etc. Alongside the stall we will be running Take Home Naloxone training and/or Overdose Awareness training for anyone who wants it. At the end of each session you will get a Take Home Naloxone kit/kits but you must be a Lambeth resident to be eligible. And of course as with previous years we will have lots of food and refreshment for everyone. Each year we have received an increasing number of complaints for not buying anything healthy, last year we received 4 of them, so this year we are going for 6 complaints.
As we have always used International Remembrance Day on the 21st of July each year as our day to remember lost friends and family for us (IOD 2015) is more about empowering our community. We as People Who Use Drug’s (PWUD’s) are the most marginalised, stigmatised and criminalised group of people who have historically been spat on, locked up and executed shout out for better drug policy, fairer drug laws and demand to be treated with dignity and respect.
This day for us has always jumped from happy to sad as we go through the day, happy because we meet up with people who we thought had died a longtime ago and then sad because we hear of friends who have died that we were unaware of.
So if you are in the Brixton area please pop into Lorraine Hewitt House for some chocolate or crisp, have a bullsh*t or do some training as we are there all day on Tuesday the 1st of September
