Type of Event: The youth led group, Resiliency Through Recovery of ADAPT Oakville is holding the first annual event in Halton for International Overdose Awareness Day. This event will include two guest speakers Dr. Sheldon Hershkop and Betty-Lou Kristy. Dr Hershkop is an advocate for drug addiction therapies in Halton as a family doctor and certified Addiction Medicine Specialist. He provides treatment options for opioid addictions through his private methadone clinic in Oakville. Betty-Lou Kristy is a provincial systems level advisor and consultant as a member of the Halton Region Drug Strategy Board. She guides programming and funding as well as providing peer support and outreach at a community level. In addition, personally written poems and mediation readings will be spoken by members of the youth group around a candle light vigil. This event is to remember those who have succumb to overdose, which will be reflected in a moment of remembrance.

Scottish Drugs Form: ‘One is Too Many’ Tackling preventable deaths among people who use drugs (29th August)

Type of Event: Scottish Drugs Forum are hosting a national conference to look at the current situation with drug-related deaths in Scotland, what actions are taking place to try to reduce the numbers of people who die every year and what could be done differently. Drug-related deaths in Scotland continue to be among the highest in Europe and in 2012, 581 people lost their lives. The tragedy is that the majority of these deaths were preventable.
The conference will draw on a range of experience both internationally and nationally to address the causes of death among people who use drugs and allow opportunities for networking, sharing good practice and planning for the future.
The cost for this event is £60.

International Overdose Awareness Day at Lorraine Hewitt House

Type of Event: Sadly we won’t be able to run the event on the 31st of August but as on previous years we will be running an info stall downstairs in the reception of Lorraine Hewitt House in Brixton, Lambeth with lots of harm reduction advice on safer using of drugs. Although we will have info on lots of different types of overdose we will focus mostly on opiate overdose and take-home naloxone. With the harm reduction information we will also have lots of lovely unhealthy and fattening foodstuffs like cake, crisps & chocolate. After some complaints last year at the lack of healthy food this year we will be buying an apple for the health nut who uses our service.
In the afternoon we will be running some overdose awareness and take-home naloxone training for a maximum of 12 Lambeth drug and alcohol consortium clients. The training lasts 1hr 15mins and all attendees receive a take-home naloxone kit and £10 cash for their time.The information stall and training are run and delivered by Brixton residents who use drugs. For us the day is all about having a laugh, making some new friends, sharing info and experience and stopping needless overdoses of our peers in our lovely south London Borough of Lambeth on Friday the 29th of August.

A New PATH Overdose Vigil at 7:30pm in Bard Hall and the Welcome Center Patio honoring individuals who have lost their lives due to drug overdose to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. More than 105 persons die from accidental overdose daily in the US, more than fatalities due to motor vehicle accidents for adults between 25 and 64.
Speakers will share health findings, solutions, social justice issues, and personal experiences. This event is an opportunity for loved ones and concerned citizens to come together to grieve, learn, and support each other.

This event will begin at 2 pm with a brief presentation and a ceremonial planting of a tree in honor of lives lost to heroin. Afterwards, free kites will be given out to all those in attendance for kite flying and recreation. The flying of the kites is a symbolic gesture of us finding a way to help others rise above and fly over their addictions.
