The Tribal Overdose Prevention Program at Southern Plains Tribal Health Board is hosting a prayer luncheon for the organization’s staff to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD). We will wear purple, representing grief, loss, and spirituality; it serves to pay respect to those who have passed and break the stigma surrounding substance
use. There will be an opportunity to write an IOAD tribute card to honor the memory of lost loved ones.
In Oklahoma in 2024: There was an average of 100 overdose deaths each month. Of all drug overdose deaths, 61% had at least one potential opportunity for intervention. Native Americans made up 12% of the 1,196 overdose deaths. After steadily increasing since 2020, AI/AN overdose death rates decreased in 2024. The decrease in fatal overdoses is a result of successful overdose prevention policies that allowed increased availability of life-saving supplies.
