DAPL was born 30 years ago through a growing need to heal the families of those affected by other people’s drug and/or alcohol use. The rising number of drug deaths in the Leven Area of Fife were growing at an alarming rate and the devastating effect this had on communities was palpable. Our memorial event is a symbolic reminder that 30 years on something significant must be done to reduce the drug death tole due to overdose, which is rising at an alarming rate – especially in Scotland. The key promotional strategy is to both raise awareness of overdose, but also to memorialise the dead by giving them a voice posthumously. It is for their families and communities to come together to remember their loved ones without judgement or shame and to highlight the benefits of having recovery orientated systems of care when it comes to drug and alcohol service provision. We are part of a collaboration of Patrons, Statutory and Third sector organizations, Lived and Living Experience members uniting to reduce stigma, raise awareness and create social change in our local area.
