Caboolture, Queensland

International Overdose Awareness Day
Location: Front entrance of Caboolture Community Health Centre, McKean Street, Caboolture
Event details:
Each year in Australia we lose over 2114 people
(5.8 loved ones each day) to overdose. Some survive but suffer permanent injury, with devastating impact to their families and friends.
Caboolture is not immune. You may have seen it, it may have happened to people around you. Tomorrow, it could happen to someone you love. This is not an invisible issue.
International Overdose Awareness Day provides an opportunity for us to reflect on practical ways to prevent overdose in our community. Overdose is preventable. Knowing the real facts about drugs and what to do when you see someone experiencing an overdose DOES save lives.
Overdose Day events that aim to educate our communities about drugs can really help. Caboolture Needle Syringe Program is playing our part  to support the day with an awareness raising event planned from 11 am to 1 pm on Wednesday 31s August.
Our event will promote greater awareness of overdose prevention and provide information on the life saving drug Naloxone (known by some as Narcan).
People attending our event will have the opportunity to make an origami paper crane. Cranes symbolise hope and it is our hope that preventable overdose soon becomes a thing of the past.

Brixton, London

Location: Lorraine Hewitt House, 12/14 Brighton Terrace, Brixton, London, SW9 8DG
Type of Event: As on previous years we will be taking over the reception area for food, refreshments, harm reduction info on all ODs, peer Take Home Naloxone training for anyone who want it. Last year we had alongside Overdose Awareness we had a special focus on Drug Consumption Rooms (DCRs) and the important role DCR’s play in stopping OD deaths in the countries that are lucky enough to have them, this year the special focus will be on the worrying spike in Drug Related Deaths (DRDs) in the UK and the role Naloxone and other harm reduction interventions can play in getting the number of DRD’s down. These events are always client led and for us the day is about empowerment our community and seeing people who use drugs as part of the solution and not the problem. As part of the event we have a large condolence book that anyone who wishes can write a message regarding somebody they have lost to OD, draw a picture or whatever they want. We have been using the same condolence book since 2008 and it is quite shocking when you look at the endless list of names in it.
The event will begin at 10am through until 3pm on the 31st of August and all are welcome. We are happy to train anyone wants Overdose and/or Take Home Naloxone. Sadly because of the governments decimation of budgets only Lambeth residents will be eligible to get the Naloxone.

Wilmington, NC

Wilmington Overdose Awareness Day
Location: WILMINGTON
Coastal Horizons Center
Administration Building, Board Room
615 Shipyard Blvd
Wilmington, NC 28412
10am-11am
Type of Event: NC Harm Reduction Coalition Plans Statewide Overdose Awareness Day Events August 31st is international Overdose Awareness Day, a time to commemorate loved ones lost from accidental drug overdose. In North Carolina, drug overdose claims over 1100 lives each year and is on track to surpass motor vehicle fatalities by 2017. The majority of the overdose deaths involve prescription painkillers, such as OxyContin, Percocet and Fentanyl and almost all are preventable with the proper tools and training.
The North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition (NCHRC), a statewide grassroots public health organization, will be hosting events in Asheville, Fayetteville, and Wilmington to remember those we have lost and mobilize people to advocate for future overdose prevention legislation and programming. Events include keynote addresses from the mayor (Fayetteville and Wilmington), a butterfly release to commemorate loved ones lost (Fayetteville only), educational events and more.
“As the opiate crisis in our community continues to grow with each life lost, the Carolina Treatment Center, NCHRC, and Radiant Church, have come together to organize this year’s Overdose Awareness Day and to kick off National Recovery Month,” says Pastor James Sizemore of Radiant Church in Fayetteville. “This year’s event is our largest yet! We are inviting everyone in the community to join us as we remember those we have lost, and to celebrate with those in recovery.”
“It is important to raise awareness around overdose deaths because overdose is preventable,” says Conner Adams, who is helping to organize the Asheville event. “As a community we can come together and put into action a promise to do our part in preventing overdose. This means being informed on the 911 Good Samaritan Law, sharing this information with others, and getting trained in Narcan/overdose prevention. Often times people feel apathetic around this issue because it seems so huge and insurmountable. The reality is that every single person can help stop overdose and save lives in our community.”
At the Asheville, Fayetteville and Wilmington locations, NCHRC will be dispensing Overdose Rescue Kits to interested attendees at high risk of overdose and to those who are likely to witness an overdose. The Rescue Kits include naloxone, a medication that reverses opiate overdose and the necessary supplies to administer it. Since NCHRC began distributing naloxone in August 2013, the organization has reversed over 4,160 overdoses.
“Expanding access to naloxone and training on how to prevent, recognize and respond to a drug overdose has saved many lives in North Carolina,” says Robert Childs, Executive Director of the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition. “We hope to use Overdose Awareness Day to launch a raise awareness about the crisis and to put naloxone and other prevention tools into the hands of all people who need them.”

(August 25, 2016) – Wednesday, August 31 marks International Overdose Awareness Day, during which events are held across the world to raise awareness and honor those who have lost their lives to the disease of addiction. It is up to our treatment facility, community leaders, neighbors and friends to join together and fight this growing epidemic.

We hope you will join us for this event, as we pay tribute not only to those whom we have lost, but to the 23 million Americans who survived and are in long-term recovery.
Turning Point Southeast Regional Market Director Karen Morgan will emcee the event in the campus atrium, which will feature guest speakers actor John Mabry, who found his brother deceased from an overdose, DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco and more.
During the event, a Proclamation by Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite will be read, designating August 31 Overdose Awareness Day in the City of Southaven. After the remarks, attendees will continue outside of the building to the Turning Point Recovery Fountain, where a prayer for the families left behind and a moment of silence will take place as a balloon is released for each overdose death in DeSoto County this year.

Movie screening: Generation Found
From the creators of the groundbreaking film, THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE, comes GENERATION FOUND, a powerful story about one community coming together to ignite a youth addiction recovery revolution in their hometown.
Devastated by an epidemic of addiction, Houston faced the reality of burying and locking up its young people at an alarming rate. And so in one of the largest cities in America, visionary counselors, law school dropouts, aspiring rock musicians, retired football players, oil industry executives, and church leaders came together to build the world’s largest peer-driven youth and family recovery community.
Independently filmed over the course of two years, GENERATION FOUND takes an unprecedented and intimate look at how a system of treatment centers, sober high schools, alternative peer groups, and collegiate recovery programs can exist in concert to intervene early and provide a real and tested long-term alternative to the “War on Drugs.” It is not only a deeply personal story, but one with real-world utility for communities struggling with addiction worldwide.

Saginaw, Shiawassee, Bay counties , Michigan Overdose Awareness Mission in Memory of Shelby Barror
On August 31st we are on a mission for international overdose awareness day to bring awareness to the heroin epidemic in and around our community in memory of Shelby Rae Barror and those lost too soon to addiction.
Approximately 129 people die each day in our country from drug overdoses. Every single person is someone’s child, parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle, cousin, friend.  We will be creating 129 necklaces and on August 31st we will be giving them away as we spread awareness throughout Saginaw, Shiawassee, and Bay counties (Michigan).
We would like dedicate each of these necklaces to a life lost too soon to addiction. If you would like to dedicate one of our 129 necklaces to a family member (family members only please) who was lost too soon to addiction please send us an email/letter to wingsformysister@gmail.com with his or her name, birth date and angel date, city/state that you live in, a picture, and your loved one’s “story”.
There is NO PURCHASE NECESSARY to dedicate a necklace and your letter can be as short or as long as you’d like and you can include as much or as little information about him or her as you’d like to share with the receiver of the necklace. Our hope is to share the life, love, and struggles of families who have lost loved ones who battled the disease of addiction as we give away each necklace and spread overdose awareness on August 31st.
Do not sit in silence. Stand strong and tell your story. Wings for my Sister~In loving memory of Shelby Rae Barror

Rochester, NY

1st Annual Scotty B. Overdose Awareness Day
Location: Martin Luther King Jr Park @ Manhattan Square, 353 Court St. Rochester, NY 14607
3:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Type of Event: Each year 47.000+ people die in the US from an opiate or heroin overdose due to the disease of addiction. Mental health and suicides often coincide and co-mingle with the disease of addiction. Addiction and Mental Health do not discriminate and affects all cultures.  Overdoses and suicides do not always result in death. Monroe County is not immune and was recently listed as having the 4th highest overdose deaths in NYS.  Many in the community think that overdose deaths are mostly by heroin users and do not realize that overdoses occur from prescription medications and alcohol.
S.O.A.R.S., Inc (Substance Overdose Awareness Recovery Services) is a non-profit organization whose primary goal is to educate the general public about the effects of overdoses on the family and the community and to prevent overdoses through education of the addict, the family, and the community, and, therefore, lowering the current increase of overdoses and overdose related deaths in Monroe County and its surrounding counties.  S.O.A.R.S., Inc began planning the 1st Annual Scotty B. Overdose Awareness Day event to provide an opportunity for all of us to reflect on practical ways to prevent overdose in our community. Overdose is preventable. Knowing real facts about overdoses, its causes, its symptoms, and what to do when you see someone experiencing an overdose DOES save lives. The 1st Annual Scotty B. Overdose Awareness Day event aims to educate our community about the leading causes of overdoses such as drugs and alcohol as well as ways for the community to get involved to try to prevent and reduce the number of overdoses in Monroe and its surrounding counties.
S.O.A.R.S. would to like NYS OASAS to participate in conjunction with several other health and community addiction and mental health service providers, advocates, and non-profit agencies by having an informational table/booth/tent at the 1st Annual Scotty B. Overdose Awareness Day event on August 31, 2016 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Park @Manhattan Square, 353 Court St, Rochester, NY 14607 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm to answer questions, provide resources and recovery information to event attendees. August 31, 2016 is International and National Overdose Awareness Day.  This year’s theme is a Time to Act, A Time to Remember.  As you know September is Recovery month and this is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to kick off September.  New York State has not had a similar event of this magnitude in regards to Overdose Awareness even though Overdose Deaths in the state are prevalent.  There will be a memorial at the park, if you have lost a loved one or would like someone remembered due to an overdose, please bring a hat and let us know!
There are several key-note speakers from Monroe County and NYS that have confirmed to date such as Rachel Barnhart – Democratic candidate for New State Assembly, Robert Zerby -Monroe County Chief Medical Investigator), and Craig Johnson of the Monroe County Jail Rehabilitation Department. and  Monroe County Executive, Cheryl Dinalfo, and others. We have asked Louise Slaughter and Senator Ort to speak in regards to the CARA Bill. We are currently waiting a response from their office as well as Monroe County Interim Public Health Commissioner, Michael Mendosa, Senator Kristen Gillibrand, and NYS Governor Cuomo’s office asking their participation as a speaker.no later than August 3, 2016 to be included on all event advertisement such as flyers, posters, and any news media You would be listed as a participant on all event advertising and all news media. Please respond no later than August 3, 2016. I will be grateful for the opportunity to speak with you in regards to the 1st Annual Scotty B. Overdose Awareness Day event and your participation.
The event will have key-note speakers, music, food, vendors, addiction treatment facility tables, Addiction advocates and not-for-profit tables, Health insurance companies, local colleges that offer addiction and mental health careers, mental health service providers, NYS Attorney general’s office, as well as a cross and baseball cap memorial.
