Hosted by Albertans for Evidence Based Drug Policy
Join the coalition of Albertans for Evidence Based Drug Policy on International Overdose Awareness Day #IOAD2021 for a march and rally. We gather to remember thousands of Albertans who have died by drug poisoning or other substance use related causes and to call for an effective public health response to this crisis.

Meet at noon at the Homeless Memorial Park in Edmonton (103A Ave and 100 St.) and march to the legislature with outreach and action along the way.
The rally at the steps of the Alberta legislature begins at 1:30 pm with speakers from coalition members, lead by people with lived and living experiences.
#DrugPolicyDeathAB #IOAD2021 #SupportSCS
In 2021 more people have died from drug poisoning than ever before in the history of our province. In March of 2021 more than 4 people died every day. The UCP government responded to this crisis by closing live-saving harm reduction services, which has already resulted in the deaths of people who used to use these services, while evidence-based interventions, such as the expansion of supervised consumption services and the provision of safe pharmaceutical alternatives to ever more toxic street drugs is flat out rejected. While the investment in treatment promised by the UCP, is positive, we first have to keep people alive.

We can’t let the people we love die. Join us to take a stand for evidence and for life.
Albertans for Evidence Based Drug Policy includes many concerned individuals and the following organizations:

AAWEAR
The Canadian Association of People who Use Drugs (CAPUD)
Moms Stop the Harm
Change the Face of Addiction
HIV Legal Network
The Canadian Drug Policy Coalition
The Harm Reduction Nurses Association (HRNA)
Alberta Nurses Coalition for Harm Reduction (ANCHR)

Where: Meet in the middle of town at the Rhinebeck bank parking lot. Our goal is to start off with a brief talk by public figures from the town and then walk together towards Oblong books and end at Samuel’s for a purple treat. Stores along the walk will have purple lights lit in their front windows. You can buy pre-made lanterns & #endoverdose t-shirts and cards at A.L. Stickles 5 & Dime right in town at 13 E. Market Street, Rhinebeck, NY 12572.

We recommend: Wear purple, bring any memorabilia/messages/posters of loved ones you’ve lost to overdose, carry a lantern, live stream the event to your social media accounts to help spread awareness and build community around this issue locally, nationally, and globally.

Ottawa County Family & Children First Council Recognizes “Overdose Awareness Day”

Seven Ottawa County citizens lost their lives to an overdose in 2020. Seven too many. The epidemic is shattering families, friends, and communities. The Ottawa County Drug Free Collaborative, an initiative of the Ottawa County Family & Children First Council, includes public and private agencies and is committed to “Reduce substance abuse to protect the health, safety, and quality of life for all, especially children”. Council members and public officials will unveil the 2020 Silent Silhouettes on the lawn of the Ottawa County Courthouse on August 31, 2021, at 1:00 p.m., to recognize “Overdose Awareness Day”. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will include a proclamation by the Ottawa County Commissioners and provide an opportunity for the community to remember those we’ve lost while making a commitment to those in recovery.
Speakers include Sheriff Steve Levorchick; Mircea Handru, The Director of the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Seneca, Sandusky and Wyandot counties, a person in recovery and a family member who lost a loved one last year. After the ceremony, members of council and the community will take part in a remembrance and awareness walk. Participants will travel from the Courthouse and east on Fourth Street to Light House Sober Living, a “recovery residence” for men. The house will be open to the public for tours and will have information on resources available within the county.
Ottawa County Family and Children First Council vision is that every child in Ottawa County will feel safe and secure within a stable family. By serving as an agent of collaboration, the council is committed to increase public awareness of the dangers of substance abuse with emphasis on opiates, treatment options and to ensure healthier communities across Ottawa County in the future.
For more information, please contact Margaret Osborne, Council Director, at 567-262-3651.

This training works to address the suicide prevention component of preventing overdose. Far too many people die from the hopelessness that leads to suicide, and sadly, coworkers in workplaces are not exempt. The Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services would like to equip your teams and your departments with training to recognize the signs and prevent suicide in the workforce.

Who should attend?`
This training is intended for any employee interested in the topic, and it is also a great introduction for HR staff who are interested in becoming trainers in their departments.

What will you learn? There are three key components of the campaign:

1. Provides suicide awareness and social marketing strategies by providing information regarding suicide and serves as a reminder that suicide can happen at any time to anyone
2. Teaches participants how to recognize when someone may be thinking about suicide, how to ask the question directly and offers tips on how to develop good listening skills, which is a key component of suicide prevention
3. Provides postvention suggestions in the event a suicide occurs to someone in the workforce

The goal of the event is to raise awareness on how the opioid crisis is impacting our immediate community, share stories, spread hope and support to all involved. Naloxone (Narcan) the opioid overdose reversal medication will be distributed throughout the day paired with training to prevent future fatal overdoses. International Overdose Awareness Day (August 31st) and month is in August. This day provides an opportunity for us to reflect on practical ways to prevent overdose in our community. Overdose is preventable. Knowing the real facts about drugs and what to do when you see someone experiencing an overdose DOES save lives. IOAD events that aim to educate our communities about drugs can really help. Each year we lose thousands of people from drug overdose globally. Some survive but suffer a permanent injury, with devastating impact to their families and friends. Fort Wayne, IN and Allen county is not immune. You may have seen it; it has happened to people around you. Tomorrow, it could happen to someone you love. This is not an invisible issue.

What: Overdose Awareness and Remembrance Day
When: Tuesday, August 31st 2021 11am meet at 150 Bentinck Street, gather to march down to Wentworth Park. Event start at 11:45am
Where: Wentworth Park Bandshell, Sydney, NS
Why: To invite you to stand beside friends and families of overdose victims to reflect on their lives and their losses. Events such as this will reinforce the idea that no-one feels shame or disgrace at the death of someone from drug overdose. There are programs and interventions that can safely prevent deaths due to overdose. Cape Breton is without this programming although proposals have and will continue to be submitted to both federal and provincial health departments and efforts are being made nationally to change policy within government to make the tools necessary for these interventions available to the populations most affected.
We invite anybody who lost someone to overdose to submit the first name of the person they lost to our naloxone trainer, communitynaloxonetrainer@gmail.com. You can come to the Ally Centre prior to the event to write their name, or on site the day of the event. We will hold 3 moments of silence – One for the people who have died of accidental overdose; One for the families, friends and loved ones of those who passed; and one to appeal for evidence based interventions, services and supports to mitigate the risks for people who use drugs.

Observed on the 31st of August each year, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and create change to reduce the harms associated with drug use.
The Knox Substance Abuse Action Team (KSAAT) invites the Knox County community to come together on August 31st to remember those who have died or suffered permanent injury due to drug overdose and support families who have lost their sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters. The event set to take place on the lawn at 404 South Gay Street, Mount Vernon, beginning at 7:00 pm. Education will be provided about Narcan and participants can take home a Narcan kit as well as a KSAAT Resource Toolkit. Other organizations will be available to provide resources. The event will conclude with the Rastin Tower, footbridge and viaduct being illuminated in purple to symbolize awareness of overdose and its effects. Family members who have lost a loved one are encouraged to bring photos.
By holding an event each year, Knox County is a global movement for understanding, compassion, and change. KSAAT thanks the Freedom Center, Hospice of Knox County, Knox Community Hospital, and Riverside Recovery for their community partnership. We are all a part of the solution.

We will invite clients to light a candle for their loved one and say a little prayer or tell a little story about them. So often there is no closure when an overdose occurs, this creates an opportunity for people to say goodbye.
We will also take note of how many people have direct experience of overdose throughout the week, most clients have either survived an overdose themselves or been there when someone they know has overdosed. This is to raise awareness of how common it is adn easily and quickly it can happen.
We will be educating on ways to avoid overdose and strategies on how to keep your mates safe. If our application for Naloxone administration is approved we will have those out for the community.
