Scotland’s drug deaths shame continues with today’s announcement (22 August 2023) from the National Records of Scotland (‘NRS’) that there were 1051 drug misuse related deaths in the country. This is more than 2.5 times that of the rest of the UK and as has been the case for many years the highest in Europe.

While the number of deaths linked to drugs misuse is at its lowest since 2017, the NRS report made clear that the rate of deaths was still much higher than it was when records began in 1996. It found that “after adjusting for age, there were 3.7 times as many drug misuse deaths in 2022 as in 2000”.

Join us at this community event where we will welcome a Leith priest and minister for prayers and reflection. (See Eventbrite from 24 August – tickets will be strictly limited to 50 spaces -everyone welcome.)

Followed by a 45/60 minute BBC Question Time style discussion panel – we will be joined in person by experts in the drugs space, local politicians and two experts respectively from New York and London by video.

We hope to have Naloxone training available for anyone interested. Naloxone is a game changer in reversing overdose and preventing death.

Free tea and coffee – the bar area will be closed – we regret the venue (for 2023) is not wheelchair friendly.

Overdose affects everyone. From grieving families to spontaneous first responders, the impacts of overdose are far-reaching and fall indiscriminately.

Sign up to the International Overdose Awareness Day newsletter and become part of the global movement to end overdose.
