On August 31st, 2023, Um Salal Rehabilitation and Treatment Center came alive with an atmosphere of unity, education, and hope as it celebrated Overdose Awareness Day. With nearly 60 attendees, including patients, administration, physicians, nursing staff, nutritionists, psychologists, occupational therapists, security personnel, and pharmacists, the event exemplified the center’s commitment to holistic recovery.
Overdose Awareness Day is an international event dedicated to raising awareness about overdose-related issues and reducing the stigma surrounding addiction. At Um Salal, it was an opportunity for patients and staff alike to come together, share experiences, and learn from one another.
The event was organized and led by the pharmacy team, highlighting the center’s collaborative spirit across all disciplines. Through a series of educational and interactive sessions, attendees gained valuable insights into addiction, overdose prevention, and the importance of compassionate care.

One of the most striking aspects of the day was the level of interaction among attendees. Patients shared their personal stories of addiction and recovery, creating a safe space for open dialogue. This not only helped to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction but also served as a source of inspiration for everyone present.
As the day concluded, attendees were treated to a delightful buffet, fostering a sense of camaraderie and celebration. It was a reminder that recovery is a journey that should be marked with both support and joy.

Overdose affects everyone. From grieving families to spontaneous first responders, the impacts of overdose are far-reaching and fall indiscriminately.
