Massachusetts Department of Public Health/ Bureau of Substance Addiction Services, Boston Office of Recovery Services, and Boston Medical Center will be installing a public display of over 22,000 purple flags at the Boston Common in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) on Thursday, August 31st. The flags will serve in solemn remembrance of the 20,000 lives lost in Massachusetts to overdose between 2011-2021. An additional 2,357 lavender flags will represent that many overdose deaths in the Commonwealth during 2022.

Overdose affects everyone. From grieving families to spontaneous first responders, the impacts of overdose are far-reaching and fall indiscriminately.
