Moving to a community engagement and online format, the IOAD planning committee has been working to develop an online campaign with a week of social media engagement activities, resources, personal stories, videos, and calls to action. During the week leading up to August 31st, we are asking community members, local businesses, and community organizations to show their solidarity with people who use drugs by hosting a banner or poster within their spaces and in their windows containing important messaging and demands to end the overdose crisis and to improve the lives of people who use drugs in our communities. All of the work throughout this week will be shared and posted across social media platforms. We will be holding a online debrief space after August 31st to hold space for people who have been impacted by overdose, as a space of solidarity, of anger, of healing, of tribute and of love.

Tennessee Overdose Prevention is partnering with LINKED to host our 6th annual International Overdose Awareness Day Event on August 31st, 2020 at 7:30 PM EDT. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our event will be live-streamed over Zoom. Participants must pre-register for the event.
Our main activity will be the Candlelight Virtual Vigil. At the end of our Remembering slideshow, we are asking everyone to participate by lighting their own candle in honor of those lost to addiction, including overdose, suicide, and other effects of substance use disorder.
“In preparation for the event, our non-profit partner, LINKED, has tagged over 200 resources (of 25,000+ resources) to show you more information on IOAD activities and events across the country and ideas for community such as turning homes, bridges, and buildings purple, flying flags at half-mast, and having the message on the back of buses.
These resources may direct you to overdoseday.com to see the Activities, Ideas, the History of this event or to see the 2020 Activities for your state. Some of the activities and events may be a part of IOAD but not listed on the overdoseday.com site yet.

Opioid addiction has been declared an epidemic and a national emergency. Despite being unable to gather in person, the Association of Participating Service Users – a service of the Self Help Addiction Resource Centre – is determined to meaningfully honour Overdose Awareness Day.
As part of this effort, we are producing a podcast tribute to friends and loved ones lost to overdose, and hope that some of you will be willing to take part in a brief recorded telephone call to answer the following two questions:
1. Describe the person you lost and their relationship to you
2. Tell us something you would like people to know about them
Both questions can be answered any way you like. You may have a story to tell about the person, or a feeling for what they would have been doing now. You may not have anything remarkable or original to say, but just want to give a simple remembrance. Your participation is what counts.
The only thing we ask is to focus on the person rather than their drug use. We want to give a sense of the human experience that numbers and policy arguments fail to express.
In order to take part, please send an email to apsu@sharc.org.au with a weekday and time when you can talk on the phone for around 5 minutes or less. We’ll confirm by email and then give you a call when it was requested.
You will not be asked to provide any identifying details beyond what you choose to say about yourself or the person you’re commemorating. You’ll be one of many, and the recordings will only be used for this project.

We will be at City Hall at 9:00 am to set up the display. We encourage you to bring down items (pictures of your loved ones, items that belonged to them etc) to add to our display between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm. The more personal touches we can add the more impactful the display will be
.
We will be on site from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. We have International Overdose Awareness Day bracelets and pins to hand out as well as a wealth of resources and educational information to share. We look forward to seeing new faces and reconnecting with those we have met in the past. We are here to hear your story, come down and tell us about your loved ones and the impact overdose has had on your life. We are a safe place and EVERYONE is welcome. We believe everyone deserves an opportunity to be heard and every story matters. From 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm we invite local media and local government representatives to join us. (we ask they join us in the afternoon so the display will be fully set up with your personal touches)
If you are unable to see us in person please join our online event
https://www.facebook.com/events/290328125393066/
We are pleased to say Peterborough Aids Resource Network (PARN) will be joining us and co-hosting this event. PARN brings with them the experience of fighting the opioid crisis on the front lines as well as deep understanding of harm reduction practices.
COVID – 19 Protocol: Please keep in mind the social distancing rules. We will be outside so masks will not be mandatory, however we do encourage them. We will have some masks available for anyone unable to bring their own. We will be respectful of social distancing and kindly ask you to wait your turn to visit with us and/or place items at the display.

This year’s been tough. COVID, continuing police brutality toward Black people, and all of the economic fallout has driven so many of us into instability, chaos, rage, isolation, and grief. Any “wins” we’ve seen nationally around decreased overdose have quickly turned to losses. Even fewer resources and community support are available. If we want to see changes, we have to do it together.
Join us on our Facebook page for #internationaloverdoseawarenessday this year as a space to remember, learn, and strategize to keep Arizonans alive, safe, free, and thriving.
Live panel discussion with brilliant local speakers (to be announced soon) focused on the intersections of overdose, harm reduction, and racial justice.

We want everyone to know that you are not alone in remembering your loved ones on August 31st to a drug overdose. #IOAD is a day to show that we want to change the stigma to drug related deaths. We want to raise the awareness!! This year we are involved in an official event and all you have to do is tie a purple balloon to your mailbox. You can also decorate the front of your house in as much purple and silver as you would like to show others the love and support that you have. It is a great way to get people asking questions and giving them information if needed.

Due to COVID-19 social distancing rules and keeping our supporters and the public safe I have decided to host this year’s event at a private location with limited people invited to attend in person, however everyone is invited to tune in online as we will be uploading videos throughout the day to social media awareness pages, plenty of pics and some live streaming.
Sadly, now we have around 500 hearts. Every heart represents a life, I feel personally connected to each of the hearts, behind each heart is a life lost, a broken family, a tragic story and a million tears.
Heart to Heart is an event focused on what our Purple Hearts symbolize and is an opportunity to get to know more about some of the people each heart represents, a snapshot of their story and the families they left behind.
More details about this event will be published here during the next few days.

International Overdose Awareness Day is the 31st August 2020. #IOAD2020.
Why Cranes? SENBAZURU is the art of folding 1,000 paper cranes. It is said that if you fold 1,000 paper cranes and make a wish, it will come true.
Each crane will be hung and photographed to become part of a larger digital artwork put together by the Alcohol Tobacco and other Drugs Council (ATDC) to commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day 2020.
Anglicare are calling on members of the Tasmanian community to help fold Japanese cranes and to share tributes to remember Tasmanians lost to overdose and wish for a community free from the harm of overdose.
Drug overdose continues to impact Tasmanians of all backgrounds – with more than one person lost every week to overdose across Tasmania
Come along to help us fold cranes to create another memorial to those lost to overdose and an opportunity to discuss the risks and impact of overdose.

For 3 months, commencing in August – Barwon Health will be displaying a powerful message, reminding the public of the importance of carrying naloxone. Utilising bus advertising, a large advertisement covering the entire rear of a public transport bus will be displayed.
Further, during the week of Overdose Awareness Day, each NSP delivery will receive custom made fortune cookies, containing overdose prevention messages and information on how to access free naloxone, locally.
Both these strategies were designed in light of COVID-19 restrictions which have limited face to face contact with those that access harm reduction services.

Check out regular episodes of the podcast, ‘Straight From the Source, wherever you usually get your podcasts, or at https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/straight-from-the-source-apsu-podcast/

August 31 2020 marks the 20th year of the International Overdose Awareness Day. Sadly, every year thousands of people die as a result of opioid overdose. Yet these deaths are preventable.
This event will be hosted online by the Burnet Institute and present some of the latest work on responses to opioid overdose that is being conducted by the Institute and its collaborators across Australia and internationally.
This one-hour event will feature three speakers from the Behaviours and Health Risks Program at the Institute. The program will run as follows:
1. Setting the scene, international patterns in opioid overdose: Amanda Roxburgh
2. The Stop Overdose Safely initiative, a WHO/UNODC program to scale-up take-home naloxone in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Ukraine: Paul Dietze (on behalf of the SOS project team)
3. Opioid overdose deaths in Australia – are we doing enough? Amanda Roxburgh
4. Scaling up take-home naloxone across Australia: Penny Hill (on behalf of the National Naloxone Reference Group)

In commemoration of International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, 2020, we are launching an education campaign during the month of August. We hope to reduce the stigma and prejudice associated with deaths by substance use, build awareness and educate the community about the impact it can have on individuals and families who are grieving, and promote access to supports.
Each week through the month of August, our education campaign will focus on various aspects of substance use and the grief associated with this type of death.
We will be discussing:
August 4-7: Stigma and the importance of language
August 10-14: Complicated grief and how it relates to deaths by substance use
August 17-21: Member stories and finding meaning
August 24-28: Resources, supports and International Overdose Awareness Day events
All of our campaign and discussion materials will be available through our social media channels (@BFOMR on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) and weekly emails through the month of August.

Throughout August, leading up to International Overdose Awareness Day, August 31, the Mission Overdose Community Action Team (MOCAT) is coordinating a series of community art dialogues entitled“Masks We Wear”. Stigma masks the humanity of people who use substances and sways our current policy. Our communities are devastated by the ensuing loss of loved ones, and the loss of the potential of all the sons, daughters, mothers and fathers. The masks will be exhibited during the week of International Overdose Awareness Day – August 31, at businesses on First Avenue in Mission and then displayed in the Community Art Space at The Reach Gallery Museum as part of their fall exhibition. On August 31 community members are invited to take an “artwalk” from 3-7pm downtown. A memorial banner will be onsite for those that wish to add their loved ones name in remembrance.

LifeLine is a reflection on the crisis of addiction both as a society and in one’s personal life and intends to reflect compassionate understanding for the addict’s choices while recognizing the desire and the gravitas associated with the choice to use.
~the fifth stanza of the accompanying poem by Genevieve Johnson:
Freedom
Un-perfecting until calm
Meandering around corners
With patience
Scoping the inner land
without judgment
landscapes under skin pulsing
fault lines gaps wounds: all doors to new territories
Being different as sacred
Are we alright?
the child within
is
an
oak walking
fractal self
becoming Arbutus
facing all winds

On-line Pledge Campaign to End Stigma – open to everyone, everywhere
For individuals and families impacted by substance use, stigma is an ever-present reality that results in discrimination, reluctance to access treatments and supports and contributes to overdoses. We can end stigma just through our language.
Words have power.
Consider the language you use when talking about someone who uses substances and use person-first and recovery-oriented language instead. Together, we can end the harm caused by stigmatizing language.
Join us in taking the pledge, then use the selfie cards to promote action and bring awareness.

we rent the park downtown and host a memorial BBQ to honour those who have lost their lives to overdose. last year we had traditional dancers and drumming and a local rap artist to entertain while service providers showcased their services and we did naloxone training. This year is the same event but we are also hosting a drug users meeting on the same day so people with lived experience can share their experiences. We have lost many people in our community due to lack of services or lack of continuity in services and feel that a large call out for feed back is important to feed into our advocacy efforts.

Federation Addiction organise a webinar on opioid overdose prevention, during the International Overdose Prevention Day.
Opioids are the leading cause of death by overdose in France, and their uses concern a large number of people, sometimes suffering from chronic diseases and presenting vulnerabilities to an opioid overdose.
In this context, it is necessary to strengthen access to Naloxone for users at risk of opioid overdose, whether they are dependent or in pain. But also inform and train those around them and the health professionals concerned.
An opioid receptor antagonist, Naloxone is an effective, safe and relatively easy-to-use health product for the prevention and treatment of potentially fatal opioid overdoses. This effectiveness is increased when it is combined with clear information and, at best, first aid training for users, their entourage and professionals : the public who are on the front line during an overdose.
Federation Addiction is engaged in an inter-associative dynamic with a lot of other associations and partners, to develop the tools and training programs necessary to make the best use of these RDR tools and communication tools.
The objective of the webinar is to present the various works produced by the inter-associative group but also to answer various questions on opioid overdoses and naloxone such as:
what is an opioid?
what is an opioid overdose?
what are the risk factors?
what is naloxone
where to find the naloxone kits? how to get it?
what risk reduction advice

August 31, 2020 – International Awareness Day for Overdose deaths overdose
This international day was established with the main objectives of:
– Claiming a change in international drug policies to reduce the burden of overdose deaths.
– To remember those who lost their lives in this “war on drugs”, which is nothing more than a war against people who use drugs to their families and friends and to all of society.
– Recognize the “chronic” pain of the friends and family of those who lost their lives in this war.
– Recognize the persistence of stigma associated with the use of illicit “drugs” and deaths from overdose, identify what allows stigma to persist and create active strategies and measures to combat and eliminate it, in line with resolution 6/11 of the Commission of Narcotic Drugs (CND) of the United Nations (UN): “Promotion of non-stigmatizing attitudes to guarantee the availability, access and implementation of social, health and care services for people who use drugs”( https://www.unodc.org/documents/commissions/CND/CND_Sessions/CND_61/CND_res2018/CND_Resolution_61_11.pdf)
In 2019, 874 events of all kinds were promoted in 39 countries.
CASO (Associated Consumers Survive Organized) association, like in previous years, joins this International movement, coordinated by the Penington Institute, an Australian non-profit organization that promotes empathetic understanding, compassionate solidarity and the necessary changes, so that people who use drugs, their families and friends can see their humanity recognized and put an end to the stigma and premature and unnecessary deaths.
Thus, with the support of the European Network of People Who Use Drugs (EuroNPUD), with supporters and partners and with the community of People Who Use Drugs, CASO will be involved in actions in Porto and Lisbon.
In Porto, the actions will take place on Sunday 30th and Monday 31st of August in a place where there is a lot of injected consumption and will be as follows:
– Morning meeting for a symbolic cleaning of the space.
– Community lunch.
– Training of trainers in the identification of signs of opiate overdose and protocol of action, including the administration of Naloxone.
– Assembly of caregivers.
– Collection of personal testimonies.
In Lisbon, the actions result from a partnership between the Drug Consumption Mobile Unit Program (a partnership between GAT and Medecins du Monde) and CASO.
CASO supported and facilitated the planning together with a Group of Peer Workers that the Program is developing, and they will be implementing the following actions on the 31st, 1st and 2nd:
On the 31st:
– Territory cleaning
– Community lunch.
– Training of trainers on polydrug use, overdose, opioid overdose and Naloxone administration and action protocol.
– Assembly of caregivers
– Construction of a graffiti.
The training and assembly of caregivers will be repeated on the 1st and 2nd of September in the territories in which the consumption program intervenes.
(The complete list of all IOAD 2020 events happening this year can be seen at the following link: https://www.overdoseday.com/activities-2020/)
In Portugal, although we have a national syringe exchange program since 1993, only last year Naloxone was made available for outreach harm reduction teams. Despite we have a law that foresees a safe consumption spaces since 2001, but only in last year the first one was opened in Lisbon, with other spaces promised, while in Porto the debate has been going on for some years, but spaces for safe consumption you cannot see them.
These are worrying signs of the persistence of stigma and are symptoms of a clear inoperability of the model as it stands. This situation has been signalled by several stakeholders in the sector and recently Dr. João Goulão, coordinator of SICAD also calls for the Ministry of Health to make decisions that allow the evolution and development of a model that has already been, more than it is now, an international reference.
With sars-cov2 affecting the whole world and winter approaching, we fear that the “time” of politicians’ decisions will not arrive in time to prevent unnecessary death and suffering among the community of People Using Drugs, their families and friends.
Thus, we would like with these actions to remember that:
– There should be more spaces for safe consumption that would reduce the stigma, deaths, and suffering of those who consume in circumstances of greater vulnerability.
– The strategy for Naloxone to be at the right time, in the right place must be clearer so that we can prevent deaths from opioid overdose. CASO and the Peers of people who use illicit “drugs”, are available, as they have always been, to contribute to a clearer strategy and to the training of trainers in the identification of signs of opiate overdose and the protocol of action for ending unnecessary death and suffering.
– Considering that we speak of marginalized and excluded groups, classified as “hard and very hard to reach”, but that for us are the people with whom we meet every day and, therefore, “easy or very easy to reach”, we recall the availability of Peers of People who use illicit “Drugs” to facilitate or be the bridge between these people and the responses and services of the State and Civil Society to which they are entitled like any other human being.
replacement therapy should not be a prison
– treatment is not only abstinence
– consumption is not just a disease but a complex human phenomenon
– service beneficiaries are not yet involved in political or clinical decisions as they should
So, despite being a model that at the time was innovative and inspiring, now we need to be able to fully apply it and try to respond to the new challenges we face, namely:
– drug checking services
– specialized services for women and non-conforming gender persons
– responses to new needs arising from different contexts of use
In summary, we think, in line with the Global Commission on Drug Policy, that the next logical step will be the regulation of the drug market with the meaningful involvement of servicer users and people who use drugs.

This year, we will repeat the campaign from Support Don’t Punish, which we carried out a month ago. We will join the protests with banners and T-shirts designed by EuroNPUD. The AREAL Association is part of a civic initiative that is not happy with our nationalist right-wing government. From March 2020, we go to the streets and in front of the parliament every Tuesday and Friday to protest. We have an open microphone in front of the monument to France Prešeren (our national poet). Our movement has 6 groups – we joined the social affairs group (we could also go to the medical affairs group, but we wouldn’t get the word out there because they deal too much with Covid-19).
No Passaran!
To have a better idea – about 5,000-7,000 of us gather. Depending on the action, we are also on bikes from time to time to make it easier to avoid the Police.

ICANNA Institute achieves its goals through the implementation of research, development, analysis, education, training, counseling, monitoring, publishing, informing, raising awareness, proposing expert opinions or standpoints, offering expert advice and similar. Too many people have died from drug overdoses during last years. We will publish several articles to raise more awareness on gaps to be bridged in implementing of national drug strategy. The articles show significant gaps between the abitious strategic goals and policy actions adopted by the government and the reality perceived by different NGOs and our institute. The following is the summary of the articles and the ICANNA’s data and standpoint: Innovation harm reduction interventions such as naloxone distribution programs and drug consumption rooms are not available in Slovenia. Also, “good Good Samaritan law” is not available and there is no legal protection to people who give reasonable assistance to those who need drug related help. The poorly designed drug policy the state has also fueled overdose crises. For example, by focusing repressive drug policies on low level offenders and people who use drugs the state has also aggravated harms to public health. EU and the national governments must acknowledge the negative consequences of the repressive law enforcement approaches to drug policies and there should be more support for overdose prevention efforts by EU and national governments. The proposed New EU Drugs Agenda 2021-2025 and related EU Action Plan on Drugs continues to ignore some evidence: The most effective means to prevent deaths by overdose are still lacking across the EU.
